Major Sheila Dixon and Mayo Shattuck III, Constellation Energy’s chairman, president and chief executive officer, announced a $500,000 investment in the Cleaner Greener Baltimore Initiative during the August 12, 2009 launch of the Baltimore Neighborhood Energy Challenge (BNEC). $200,000 will go towards funding the BNEC over two years. The remaining $300,000 will be used to help Baltimore reach its goal of doubling its tree canopy.
The press conference for the BNEC launch took place on N. Fulton Avenue, in front of the First Mount Calvary Baptist Church. The Fulton Avenue and Sandtown-Winchester communities are one of nine neighborhoods that are participating in the challenge.
Shattuck said the two programs “directly address energy reduction goals outlined by the state of Maryland … and aligns with efforts that we have under way to invest in clean energy for Maryland. We give customers the tools and information they need to use energy more efficiently and employ advanced technologies that further promote energy conservation and efficiency.”
The investment was made to the Cleaner Greener Baltimore Initiative which is a partnership between the City of Baltimore and the Baltimore Community Foundation. The foundation is the fiscal manager of all funds for the programs.
“The funds will cover the cost of planting and maintaining several thousand new trees in the city”, said Stacey Ullrich, executive director of marketing for Constellation.
Constellation is already seeing early signs that the neighborhood challenge could help Baltimore reach its goal of lowering energy usage by 15 percent.
“We are seeing a lot of e-mail communications that a lot of neighborhoods are doing more than we initially thought they would do,” Ullrich said. “So from our perspective, that’s a huge success.”
