Have any tips to improve recycling and make it easier?
Roughly 50% of your household trash is recyclable, so the first tip is make sure you have enough receptacles to easily separate your trash.
- Many residents have found regular trash cans with wheels make bringing their recycling to curbside much easier, especially your mixed paper which can be heavy. The City accepts recycling in any container as long as it’s clearly labeled recycling (please be kind and do not exceed 32 gallons or 35 lbs.). Just toss it in, it doesn’t have to be separated.
- Place paper bags near your mail slot to collect “junk” mail, one in your kitchen for all the recyclable cereal and pasta boxes and one near your desk/office space for office paper. If the recycling bag is nearby, you’re more likely to recycle the various paper types.
- Place a 13-gallon trash cans in your kitchen for plastics, aluminum cans and steel cans. Clean the items, toss them in the bins and when full, take them out to fill your larger recycling bins. Having a larger can in the kitchen makes it convenient to pop in the item and reduces trips to the garage—if you have the space.
- Reducing unwanted junk mail reduces paper consumption and is better for the environment -- Visit The Direct Marketing Association’s consumer web site www.dmachoice.org/index.php for advice on having your address placed on the national “do not mail list”. This really works.
- If you would like to reduce the number of pre-screened credit and insurance offers you are receiving, visit www.optoutprescreen.com or call 1-888-5OptOut (1-888-567-8688) to opt-out of these offers. This is a free service to consumers offered by the major credit bureaus.
